The SBWPC was organized in October of 1987 by UCSB political science professor Gayle Binion, Antioch College Associate Dean Lois Phillips, and then Executive Director of the L.A. City Commission on the Status of Women, Susan Rose. In January of the following year, SBWPC held its first reception that brought together 250 people and featured Betty Friedan as the keynote speaker.
