Biographical / historical:

John Allen Clements (1923-2024) was a physician and scientist whose discovery of lung surfactant in the 1950s led to the development of life-saving treatments for neonatal respiratory distress syndrome, significantly reducing infant mortality rates. He completed his undergraduate and medical school studies at Cornell Medical College. He served 12 years with the Medical Research Division, Army Chemical Center, Maryland, where he investigated how to protect lungs from nerve gas. He joined UCSF in 1960, recruited by Julius Comroe, MD, the head of the new Cardiovascular Research Institute. Throughout his career at UCSF, he served as a mentor and made and assisted in contributions to pulmonary medicine. He received numerous recognitions for his work, including the Albert Lasker Clinical Medical Research Award, the Gairdner Foundation International Award, and the Pollin Prize for Pediatric Research.
