Biographical / Historical
The National Lectureship of Churches of Christ is an annual lecture series that began in 1945 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma following
Brother Richard Nathaniel (R.N.) Hogan's suggestion. As an influential preacher, educator, and writer, he aspired to connect
congregations nationwide both with fellowship and through the teaching and preaching of the New Testament. With the help of
Levi Kennedy, J. S. Winston, and G. E. Steward, the first National Lectureship of Churches of Christ occurred in the East
Seventh Street Church of Christ with 36 people attending. With the Civil Rights Movement occurring during this time, the National
Lectureship of Churches of Christ helped foster encouragement and unity among predominantly African American congregations
and continues to do so, hosting thousands of attendees annually. Many prevalent Church of Christ preachers have been featured
at the National Lectureship of Churches of Christ over the years, including Marshall Keeble.
Brother R.N. Hogan made a great impact on those around him. For his tremendous achievements, he received an honorary Doctor
of Humane Letters degree in 1975 from Pepperdine University, as well as a ministerial scholarship established in his name
in 1980. Furthermore, he was presented the Life Achievement Award in 1987 at the 44th Pepperdine Bible Lectureship.
