Background
Thomas J. Barkle was born in Llantriscant, South Wales. An ordained Presbyterian minister, he held several pastorates before
arriving in Monterey in 1918, where he became the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Monterey. He retired in 1938.
In 1936 he established the Monterey Museum and specialized in collecting Robert Louis Stevenson, Civil War, and California
historical materials.
