This collection was purchased by Stanford University, Special Collections throughout the
2000s.
Arrangement
The original accessions from the collection are arranged into two series: the general
pamphlets and the Luzeiro pamphlets with their colorful covers. Additional accessions are
each listed as their own series. Within each series, pamphlets are organized alphabetically
by the author's name. Authors with multiple pamphlets have their own folders; authors with
only one or two are grouped together.

Scope and Contents
The collection contains poetry pamphlets from northeastern Brazil's tradition of Literatura
de Cordel, or "Stories on a String." The pamphlets contain poems and verses which are
published and hung on clotheslines strung across poets' stalls in local marketplaces. The
poems cover religious traditions, romances, animal fables, folktales, famous people, and
current events. Many have woodcut illustrations on the covers or other illustrations
throughout.

While Special Collections is the owner of the physical and digital items, permission to
examine collection materials is not an authorization to publish. These materials are made
available for use in research, teaching, and private study. Any transmission or reproduction
beyond that allowed by fair use requires permission from the owners of rights, heir(s) or
assigns.
