Biographical / Historical

Mildred Sutton was the wife of Dr. Frank Sutton. Dr. Sutton was a physician before he was the Assistant Medical Director, later Medical Director of Rochelle General Hospital. The two lived in Rochester, New York during the Second World War and their nephews, as well as their landlord's two sons, wrote to them during the war. They include:

Processing Information

This collection was donated in the form of an unbound scrapbook. Correspondence and photographs, including ephemera and clippings, were either glued to the pages or afixed to photo corners. The correspondence, in particular, was folded into their original envelopes and the envelopes were glued to the pages.
For preservation and access purposes, further processing may need to be considered. At the time of initial processing, it was decided to keep the materials in their original order.

Content Description

This collection contains two large scrapbooks containing 193 correspondence to Mildred Sutton from family and friends during the Second World War. Included in the correspondence are telegrams, postcards and holiday cards, from nephews of her and her husband, Dr. Frank Sutton, and two sons of the family's landlord (see bio note for identification of authors). Also included in the collection are 71 photographs, 20 clippings, ephemera such as foreign money and brochures, and 6 copies of correspondence to and from Dr. Charles McGarry after his son had been killed in France. The donor also included 5 sheets of biographical and inventory information.

Series 3, Correspondence and photographs from Philip A. McGarry and other materials 1943 December 26 - 1949 May 13

Scope and Contents

This series contains 30 letters and nine photographs from or concerning Pvt. Philip A. McGarry, USA during the Second World War. One of the photographs is on a clipping and four of the photographs are of his grave stone in France. Also included is one obituary. Pvt. McGarry was killed in action in Metz, France in late 1944.
Seven of the letters, six of which are copies, were to or from Pvt. McGarry's father Dr. Charles McGarry regarding his son's death and deciding whether to retrieve his remains. The decision was to leave him in France, where he was permanently interred at the US Military Cemetery in St. Avold, France in 1949.
Two letters, also included in Series 5, are from Capt. Herb E. Niederberger, USA to his wife. He told her about Pvt. McGarry (apparently she knew him) and how he died. The second letter is a copy made at the time for someone of a letter describing visiting Pvt. McGarry's grave in France in October 1945.

Scope and Contents

This series contains 33 letters, two postcards, 42 photographs, one Hawaiian Christmas card, and one brochure from 1stSgt. L. Myrl "LM" Hines, USA during the Second World War. The brochure is for San Francisco and the photographs includes surfing and tourism in Ekahanui Gorge and Oahu, Hawaii and the boat trip home in 1946 which included B-29 bombers on an airstrip.
The last letter was addressed by Hines as a staff sergeant, but the last photograph of him once he is home is of him in uniform as a first sergeant.
