SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, originally named Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC), is a Department of Energy
(DOE) Office of Science laboratory operated by Stanford University on behalf of the DOE and located in Menlo Park, California.
The laboratory was founded in 1962 with the initial goal of building and maintaining a linear particle accelerator. While
SLAC's scientific mission was originally focused on particle physics and accelerator science, in the past 50 years it has
expanded to include cosmology, materials and environmental sciences, biology, chemistry, and alternative energy research.
