The Santa Clara Valley Youth Band was founded in 1959 by San Jose State music professor Clement Hutchinson. Membership was drawn from schools throughout the County, performing programs of show tunes and classical music around the state, including the Hollywood Bowl, Disneyland, the California State Fair, and local venues. In 1970 the group embarked on a month-long tour of Australia. In the 1970s, membership began to decline, due to a combination of school system music program decline, increase in student after-school employment and extracurricular activities, and a lack of advertising money. The group's move from San Jose to Los Gatos in the late 1970s also contributed. By 1986, enrollment had dropped too low for the band to continue.
