Description
The Nelson Nagai and Grace Sumida Collection consists of clippings, programs, and photographs compiled by Nelson Nagai and Grace Sumida.
Background
Grace Rayko Nagai, nee Sumida, (1915-2012) was interned with her family at the Santa Anita Racetrack and the Rohwer Relocation Center, Arkansas. During her time at Rohwer, she met her future husband Katsuo Kenneth Nagai. Both Katsuo and Grace were granted citizen's indefinite leave in March 1944. They were married one year later in Denver, Colorado. Two years later, the two moved to Stockton, CA where Grace became an active member in her community. Nelson Nagai is a son of Katsuo and Grace Nagai. Nelson became a history professor at Delta College and compiled various materials pertaining to the Japanese-American experience in Stockton before and during World War II.
