    Biography

The Morton family were early settlers in the San Joaquin Valley.

    Scope and Contents

Album of 162 snapshot-sized images recording the lives and travels of a family of early San Joaquin Valley settlers. The album appears to have been assembled by Florence E. Morton (whose parents settled in the area in the 1850s) for her son, William P. Morton and his wife, Violet. Some detail on the family history is provided in two newspaper clippings laid into the album. William Morton was a farmer, and many interesting images document the working life of the farm: harvesting hay, alfalfa, pumpkins, and melons; orange groves; dairy cows, goats, and pigs; mule teams at work, etc. There are shots of the family homestead as well as those of relatives in neighboring counties, with locales in Stockton, Coalinga, and Kern County identified. The family appears to have been relatively prosperous. Will stands proudly next to his first car (likely a 1917 Reo Model M), and the family is shown vacationing at Pismo Beach, sending a son to Camp Sequoia and seeing the big trees, and traveling to Washington State and Canada.
