Background

Scope and content:

A collection of Chinese hanging scrolls featuring paintings and calligraphy. The scrolls were created by various artists and gifted to USC by various donors. The collection includes originals and reproductions created in a variety of formats, including a few stone rubbings. Some of the scrolls include inscriptions documenting that the scroll was a gift to the USC East Asian Library, while other inscriptions document exchanges prior to USC's acquisition (e.g., "from General Huang [Chieh] to Theodore Chen"). The majority of the scrolls in the collection were gifts to or from Theodore Hsi-en Chen. Other sources of the scrolls in this collection include Chow Tse-tsung, Dong Zuobin, and Ren Jiyu.
