Scope and Content of Series

Series 1) FIELDWORK AND WRITINGS. Arranged in five subseries: A) Journals, B) Interviews, C) Submissions, D) Supplementary Material, and E) Deep Water Project.

A) Journals: Includes typescript pages of Critchlow's field research journal for Houses Far From Home: British Colonial Space in the New Hebrides. Journals entries are from July 1994 (in England and France), through 1995 (in Vanuatu).

B) Interviews: Transcripts of interviews conducted with ex-colonial officials and others associated with the New Hebrides, on the topics of housing and colonialism. Interviews were conducted between 1994-1995 by Critchlow and Will Stober. Arranged by year, and then alphabetically within each year. Sound recordings of these interviews may be found in Series 3.

C) Submissions: Answers to interview questions obtained via correspondence.

D) Supplementary Material: Includes British residency plans, maps, photographs and slides of houses, New Hebrides British Service Civil lists, Will Stober correspondence and spiral bound copies of Stober's Land Issues and Records. A photo database created by Critchlow is also included which describes the date and subject of the photographs and numbered slides. Slides and photographs include captions.

E) Deep Water Project: Research materials for Critchlow's book, Deep Water: Development and Change in Pacific Village Fisheries (1989). The bulk of this material dates from 1984-1985 and includes interview notes and transcripts, Vanuatu Fisheries Department reports from 1981-1984, Canadian University Service Overseas materials, notes, and journals. In original order.

Scope and Content of Series

Series 2) NEW HEBRIDES BRITISH SERVICE RESEARCH MATERIAL: Photocopies of selected primary resources from 1907-1985, including administrative, housing, and municipal documents from the Western Pacific Archives (WPA). Critchlow visited the WPA in 1994-1995 to examine records of the New Hebrides British Service. The documents provide contextual information on colonial administration in Vanuatu. Much of this material was used in the writing of Critchlow's Houses Far from Home: British Colonial Space in the New Hebrides. Most of the documents are in English, although some are in French.

The first part of the research materials, in purple folders, is arranged in original chronological order. The second part of the research materials is in grey folders and includes an index to alphabetized subject files.

Scope and Content of Series

Series 3) INTERVIEWS - AUDIOVISUAL RECORDINGS: Most of this material, the bulk of which consists of interviews from 1994 and 1995, supported the writing of Critchlow's book Houses Far from Home: British Colonial Space in the New Hebrides. Transcripts are available in Series 1) for recordings whose cassette cases had a sticker dot applied (by Critchlow). Unless otherwise noted, the media format is audiocassette.

Scope and Content of Series

Series 4) HOUSEGIRL WORKSHOP - AUDIOVISUAL RECORDINGS. In 2001, Critchlow convened a multi-day workshop funded by the SHRCC, interviewing twenty-one Ni-Vanuatu women who were former domestic workers ("house-girls"). The women gave testimony of their time working under British, French, Chinese, and Vietnamese masters. Critchlow subsequently received a Rockefeller fellowship in 2002 to write about her findings. House-Girls Remember: Domestic Workers in Vanuatu was published in 2007.
