Abstract: Over 400 portraits of prominent 19th century figures issued in a "Collection Felix Potin" series.
Scope and Contents
Prominent French merchant Felix Potin published several different bound sets of photograph portraits picturing European and
Eastern royalty and statespeople, as well as primarily French figures of the military, judiciary, church and state, artists,
writers, scientists, composers, explorers and bicyclists. The 1.5" x 3" cartes de vistes were printed with 'Collection Felix
Potin' at the top and the subject's name at the bottom. Selected versions of these albums contained biographical notes on
the reverse of each page; the cards in this collection were cut out of these albums and notes are often present, however they
do not match the portraits.
The following photographers are represented in the collection: Appert; Barenne, Charles; Bary; Benque; Berthaud; Boyer; Brogi,
Giacomo; Byrne; Carat; Coerau; Disderi, Ladrey; Enerft; Florman, Gosla; Gerschel; Hollerutsdaiz; Loescher & Petsch; Nadar;
Petit, Pierre; Pirou, Eugene; Reutlinger; Russell & Sons; Van Bosch; Walery.
