    Abstract: Michael Stuart Gottlieb is an American physician and immunologist known for his 1981 identification of acquired immune deficiency syndrome ( AIDS next hit ) as a new disease. This collection contains published papers by Gottlieb and many others on previous hit AIDS next hit -related topics. It also includes information on various previous hit AIDS next hit drug treatment studies, professional and personal correspondence, and information about various talks and events attended by Gottlieb during the 1980s. It also includes materials related to Gottlieb's previous hit AIDS next hit -related philanthropic work, as well as materials related to his time as actor Rock Hudson's personal physician until the actor's death from previous hit AIDS next hit in 1985.
    Condition Description: Collection was infected with silver fish and was treated at the Bancroft library preservation department. Some of the materials show evidence of water damage.

    Biographical / Historical

    Michael Stuart Gottlieb is an American physician and immunologist known for his 1981 identification of acquired immune deficiency syndrome ( previous hit AIDS next hit ) as a new disease. Gottlieb was born in 1947 in New Jersey and was educated at Rutgers University, the University of Rochester, and Stanford University, where had a fellowship in immunology. In 1980, he accepted a position at the UCLA School of Medicine, where he worked for nearly 20 years. In 2019, he accepted a position at APLA Health in Los Angeles, a nonprofit devoted to the health and well-being of people living with HIV/ previous hit AIDS next hit .
    Gottlieb is also well-known as the personal physician to actor Rock Hudson after Hudson's previous hit AIDS next hit diagnosis. He also established, with a gift from the Hudson estate and with the help of Hudson's friend Elizabeth Taylor and medical researcher Mathilde Krim, the American Foundation for previous hit AIDS next hit Research. Gottlieb was also actively involved in fundraising and philanthropy related to previous hit AIDS next hit treatment and advocacy.
    He was also an investigator in early clinical trials of several different previous hit AIDS next hit drug treatment studies, including AZT, an antiretroviral which was later approved by the FDA for the treatment of HIV/ previous hit AIDS next hit .

    Professional papers of Michael Stuart Gottlieb, an American physician and immunologist known for his 1981 identification of acquired immune deficiency syndrome as a new disease, and for his HIV/ previous hit AIDS next hit research, HIV/ previous hit AIDS next hit activism, and philanthropic efforts associated with HIV/ previous hit AIDS next hit treatment.
    The collection contains published papers by Gottlieb and many others on previous hit AIDS next hit -related topics. It also includes information on various previous hit AIDS next hit drug treatment studies, professional and personal correspondence, and information about various talks and events attended by Gottlieb during the 1980s. It contains previous hit AIDS next hit -related newspaper and magazine articles and ephemera, as well as photographs, slides, VHS tapes, and CD-ROMs.

    Separated Materials

    1.5 cartons worth of books on previous hit AIDS next hit and related subjects were donated and removed after culling for duplicates in the UCSF Library collection. Non-duplicative titles were kept for cataloging.
