Background

Scope and content:

The collection contains 39 volumes of plays by William Shakespeare as well as one introductory volume on the playwright, published from 1934-1936. Most of the volumes have an inscription with the month and year the volume was gifted to Katherine Drummond. Some volumes contain photographs with signatures of actors who performed in one or more of Shakespeare’s plays at the California Pacific International Exposition (1935-1936). Photographs are affixed onto the pages corresponding to the plays performed by the actors.

Biographical / historical:

“The New Temple Shakespeare” edition of William Shakespeare’s plays was originally published in 1894. This edition, edited by M.R. Ridley with engravings by Eric Gill, was published between 1934 and 1936. Katherine Drummond acquired the volumes, apparently as gifts, between 1935 and 1942.

The California Pacific International Exposition in Balboa Park (1935-1936) was accompanied by performances of several Shakespeare plays at the Old Globe Theatre. Many of the actors in the productions went on to have notable acting careers performing on Broadway and in television and film, including Joe A. Callaway. Callaway had a prestigious acting career and is currently remembered through the Joe A. Callaway Awards established by its namesake to recognize excellence in acting. Franklin Heller went on to direct the famous television show, “What’s My Line?” for 17 years. Other notable actors include, Boris Aplon, Carl Benton Reid, Irene Tedrow, Bertram Tanswell, Jack Woolley (later known as Jackson Woolley), Jackson Perkins, Martha Ellen Scott, and Rhys Williams.
