    Abstract: This collection documents the academic and professional life of Pat Williams- a former union operating engineer. Also an advocate for women in trades, Williams has participated in the labor and non-traditional women's occupation movement in Southern California. Materials in this collection include: correspondence; personal papers; materials related to International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE); newsletters; magazines; and other documents collected from trades unions; and tradeswomen and related organizations; materials concerning career development including apprenticeship programs; materials regarding events and conferences; photographs; videocassettes; and ephemera such as stickers, t-shirts, pencils, and hats. The bulk of the materials in this collection relate to Pat Williams' involvement within IUOE Local 501 and include IUOE Local 501 contracts and agreements; as well as magazines and newsletters.     Scope and Contents

    The Pat Williams Collection (1895-2023; undated bulk 1950-2010) contains correspondence, clippings, newsletters, brochures, flyers, pamphlets, t-shirts, stickers, and other materials relating to Williams' academic and professional career as a union operating engineer. The bulk of the material pertains to items collected during Pat Williams' time as a member and Vice-President of the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 501, as well as items collected due to Williams' involvement and participation within Southern California and national tradeswomen organizations, conferences, and events. Other materials included in this collection include items pertaining to career development and education for women in the trades including information regarding training and apprenticeship programs. The Personal File series contains certificates, awards, credentials, notes, correspondence, and ephemera pertaining to Pat Williams' career as an operating engineer. The International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) series, the largest series in this collection, contains magazines, newsletters, brochures, buttons, pins, stickers, flyers, programs, contracts, agreements, and arbitration hearing transcripts regarding both the IUOE and the IUOE Local 501. The Tradeswomen Organizations and Related Groups series contains calendars, event programs, invitations, and newsletters collected from tradeswomen support groups, tradeswomen, and other closely related organizations such as Oregon Tradewomen Inc., Tradeswomen Inc., and others. The Tradeswomen Related Publications series contains newspapers, newsletters, clippings, articles, and magazines collected by Pat Williams because of their importance to tradeswomen news and advocacy. The Conferences, Events, and Workshops series contains brochures, conference programs, workshop lists, videos, and photographs regarding tradeswomen related events, conferences, and workshops such as: Women Building California and the Nation, Harry Bridgers Institute Working Class Women's luncheon, and others. The Career Development in the Trades series contains brochures, guides, flyers, and other documents that provide information regarding apprentice, training, and education programs for women interested in careers in the trades. The Other Labor Unions series contains newsletters, flyers, stickers, pins, t-shirts, and other material related to trades unions other than the IUOE such as: Steel Metal Workers, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, United Steelworkers, and others. The Subject File series contains pamphlets, flyers, clippings, brochures, and other documents collected because they either relate to or may be of interest to women in trades. The Media and Ephemera series contains audio files, and videocassettes that focus on topics regarding apprenticeship and training programs, tradeswomen working on job sites, and other resources for women in the trades; material related to political campaigns such as buttons, democratic national convention passes; and other ephemera such as postcards, a bottle opener, and pencils.

    Immediate Source of Acquisition

    In support of the Tradeswomen Archives project at California State University Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) initiated by Dr. Vivian Price, Pat Williams donated material that documents her career and academic achievements as an electrician and member of International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 501 , as well as her interest and advocacy for women in trades.

    Biographical / Historical

    Pat Williams is a retired stationary operating and maintance engineer, who during her 32 year tenure was an Assistant Chief Engineer, District Representative, and Vice President of Operating Engineers Local 501. Williams, one of the first women to enter the Operating Engineer apprenticeship program in Los Angeles in 1979 has been a long time tradeswomen activist and advocate for gender equity in skilled trades. Williams has been involved in groups such as the Women Build Nations annual conference; Pride and a Paycheck; the Tradeswomen Archives at CSUDH; the Tradewomen Memorial Wall Project at the Long Beach Rosie the Riveter Park; the Commission on the Status of Women for the City of Los Angeles; Policy Group on Tradeswomen's Issues; KickAss careers; Blue Collar Women; Southern California Tradeswomen Network, and others. Williams holds a bachelor of arts degree in Sociology from UCLA; and an Associate of Science, Operation and Maintenance, from Los Angeles Trade-Tech College.
