Biographical / Historical
Ulrich B. Graff was born on March 26, 1909. He graduated from Galileo High School in San Francisco, California in 1926 and
then attended two years at Stanford University. He married wife Lucille Knutson on October 22, 1938. They had two daughters,
Susan and Deborah.
He started his career as an installation clerk, then became a draftsman, then a mechanical engineer in San Francisco. Graff
was a renowned railroad model builder who built cars, locomotives and a bridge. In the 1960s, he scratch-built a 17/64" model
railroad. He also contributed numerous articles to RAILROAD MODEL CRAFTSMAN magazine between 1952 and 1965 and his work appeared
in MODEL RAILROADER in the 1940s and 1950s.
Ulrich died on May 31, 1991 in San Jose, California.

Scope and Contents
Drawings and notes by railroad modeller and mechanical engineer / draftsman Ulrich B. Graff. Created between 1925 and 1946,
these drawings were used to create railroad models and some were published in RAILROAD MODEL CRAFTSMAN in the 1950s and 1960s.
There are also a series of geometric problems for one of Graff's classes at Galileo High School in San Francisco, in the early
1920s and a sketch of the floor plan of his house on Bel Ayre Drive. There is a letter from a model-builder friend in 1962
and some specifications for steam locomotives and cars.
