Abstract: The Martin D. Burkenroad Papers consists of four boxes of material relating to Burkenroad's work in marine biology. The collection
includes correspondence (bulk), article manuscripts and illustrations. Burkenroad was a research associate at the San Diego
Natural History Museum in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Biographical / Historical
Martin D. Burkenroad was a marine biologist who specialized in decapod crustaceans and fisheries science. Born on March 20,
1910 in New Orleans, Louisiana, Burkenroad was the only child of coffee importer David Burkenroad (J. Aron & Co.) and the
artist Flora Salinger Burkenroad. He was educated at Tulane University and Yale. He worked briefly at the Carnegie Marine
Biological Laboratory at Dry Tortugas and for the Louisiana Department of Conservation before attending Yale, where he stayed
for many years conducting graduate research. He consulted for the governments of Panama and Costa Rica on the development
of shrimp fisheries and later worked in association with Tulane University. After a brief appointment with Scripps Institution
of Oceanography, Burkenroad became a research associate with the San Diego National History Museum in 1978. Burkenroad died
on January 12, 1986 in La Jolla, California.
