"Line and Staff/Camp Hopkins/1942/October Session/School of the Line and Staff" 1942

Scope and Content

This graduation portfolio celebrates the School of the Line and Staff, located at Camp Hopkins and operated by the California State Guard. It contains a history of the School, which was founded to provide 30 days of training and study in military tactics and related subjects for 24 commissioned officers of the line, detached from the 12 regiments of the California State Guard; a roster of faculty; photographs of the student corps and faculty; and the names of the graduates. It is inscribed on the front end paper to Polly Carruthers, daughter of Captain John F.B. Carruthers, and dated "Christmas/1942/Pasadena".

Scope and Content

List of names and addresses of non-commissioned officers, dated July 5, 1942. Includes typed and handwritten names; 5 carbon copies of Special Orders, dated July 19, 1942, appointing officers to posts at the First Aero Squadron, California State Militia; carbon copy of letter dated July 31, 1942 from Major William Dunn, California State Guard, to John Lubken, Inyo County Board of Supervisors, regarding the Guard's request to maintain and operate an air base at Manzanar airport; 2 carbon copies of a Special Order, dated August 2, 1942, for a promotion of a non-commisioned officer; and a typed letter from Staff Sargeant Hosler to the Officers of the 1st Aero Squadron, California State Militia, regarding a program for enlisting recruits for the Squadron.

Scope and Content

Photographs of soldiers, presumably members of the 1st Aero Squadron. Each has penciled notations on the reverse, including some names.
