Arrangement

The collection is arranged in two series. Each series is arranged chronologically by date range with the exception of born-digital objects. Large-format materials are arranged physically by size and shape in an oversize flat box.

Biographical Note

Floyd E. Norman (b. 6/22/1935) is the first African American cartoon animator for Disney Studios. He was born in Santa Barbara, California in 1935 and attended the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena until he was hired by Walt Disney Productions as an animator in 1956.
Norman founded Vignette Films, Inc. in 1966, one of the first studios to make animated films about Black history. During his career, Norman also worked for Hanna-Barbera, Film Roman, Ruby-Spears Productions, and Pixar. His animation work includes comic strips, illustrated children's books, advertisements, storyboards, and animated motion pictures.
Norman is also a script writer, columnist, and blogger. He has contributed to numerous films for various production companies and works occasionally as a freelance consultant.

Content Description

This collection contains Floyd Norman's original, hand-drawn illustrations and storyboards, publications written and illustrated by Norman, newspaper clippings and magazine articles about Norman, photo copies of his works, and thirteen 16 millimeter film reels that include Norman's own home movies and several live-action and animated short films, and born-digital content. The Floyd Norman papers were established in 2019.
