Conference Preparation: Framework circa 1981

Scope and Contents note

Contains several drafts of the statement of purpose of the first Jewish Feminist Conference (including a final draft); general meeting minutes; workshop ideas; a tentative conference framework; and three large sheets of paper, one outlining a meeting agenda and two with "hopes and fears" regarding the conference.

Conference Preparation: Meeting Minutes circa 1981-1982

Scope and Contents note

This folder includes mostly handwritten meeting minutes from the planning stages of the first Jewish Feminist Conference. It also contains minutes from meetings held after the conference, most recording feedback received about the event, and a typed letter from a participant with feedback and suggestions for the next conference. Also includes a one-page financial statement.

This folder contains flyers from various events sponsored by the Jewish Feminist Conference. Includes flyers advertising fundraisers for the conference and flyers advertising the second conference.

First Jewish Feminist Conference circa 1982

Scope and Contents note

This folder contains a pre-registration packet and information about the conference, including the schedule and workshop descriptions, as well as a sign-up sheet for volunteer work shifts, maps of the venue and area, and information about local restaurants. It also includes a workshop evaluation form and "Statements from the Community." The following topics are included: ageism; internalized anti-Semitism; feminism and childcare; class and fat oppression; lesbianism; physical disability; Sephardic and bi-racial Jews; the Middle East; and women in the resistance. An issue of "Off Our Backs: A Women's News Journal," which reviews the conference, is also included (1982 August/September).

This folder includes a statement by the conference organizers; registration and conference information; a conference schedule, including information on affinity groups and workshops; a conference evaluation; a flyer for the Jewish Feminist Conference Anthology; a pamphlet from a cultural event held at the conference; and open letters from several participants regarding the inclusion of non-Jewish women at the conference.

This folder contains reports and information about several women's events and conferences not related to the Jewish Feminist Conference, including: The Gay Women's West Coast Conference (a 13-page report by Evan Paxton, press statement from the Revolutionary Caucus, and an issue of the Advocate - July 21 - Aug 3, 1971 - reporting the event); Conference '74: An Amazon Expedition (information sheet, registration information, list of possible workshops); and Lesbian History Exploration (invitational packet, flyer, and information sheet; May 2-4, 1975).

Scope and Contents note

Contains programs for two events - Gay Freedom Day (June 26, 1977) and A Benefit for Breakaway: A School for Women (undated) - and flyers for events in the Bay Area sponsored by various lesbian and Jewish organizations, including five events hosted by Evan Rubin (formerly Evan Paxton) and several fundraisers and information sessions regarding Proposition 6 - the Briggs Anti-Gay Initiative. Also includes a newsletter from Jewish Arts Community of the Bay (Jan-Mar 1982).

Scope and Contents note

Statements and information sheets from various organizations in the Bay Area, including: The Women's Action at the Bohemian Club; Lesbian Schoolworkers; Diana Press; and the Lesbian Mothers Union (includes a newspaper article - Nov 23, 1971 - and information about the case of Jeanne Jullion, a lesbian who lost custody of her children). Also includes information about a demonstration, a legal rights fact sheet, and information regarding reporting police conduct, witnessing arrest, and arrest, as well as a newspaper article entitled, "SF Sidewalk Arrest Pattern Prompts Conspiracy Charges" (no date or source).

Scope and Contents note

Contains flyers from events held in Los Angeles sponsored by lesbian and feminist organizations, including the Woman's Building, LA Women's Switchboard, and Women on Wheels. Also includes an order form from Sapphic Journeys: Lesbian Poetry with Music, a program for a comedy concert by Sue Fink and Joelyn Grippo, and a flyer (addressed to Evan Paxton) and program for the Alcoholism Program for Women. Also includes two flyers (for the Los Angeles League for the Advancement of Lesbianism in the Arts - June 5, 1976 - and The Spirit of Sisterhood - Jan 30, 1977), meeting notes and agenda for the Los Angeles Women's Community (typed with handwritten notes, undated), and memo from Sister Salon entitled, "The Women's Community & Economic Survival" (April 4, 1976). Additional records include: organizational documents from Olivia Records, a national women's recording company. The Olivia Records documents include a catalog; a pamphlet for Project S.I.S.T.E.R (March 1, 1975), which was sponsored by Olivia Records along with several other organizations; an information sheet; a statement regarding the organization's work with Sandy Stone, a transsexual woman; and three event flyers, one of which was a fundraiser for the Lesbian Mothers' National Defense Fund (undated).

Scope and Contents note

Contains information on organizations working on human rights issues in Argentina, including a pamphlet from the Committee for Democracy in Argentina; a pamphlet from ADL Bulletin entitled, "Argentine Anti-Semitism, Again" (Jan 1981); a pamphlet from the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo; and an article from Connexions: An International Women's Quarterly, entitled, "Argentina: A Silent Weapon (Summer 1981). This folder also includes a pamphlet from the National Gay Task Force, a flyer celebrating the publication of "What Happens After School? A Study of Disabled Women;" a sample contract for Old Lady Blue Jeans on behalf of Linda Shear; a flyer for a Linda Shear concert; information on the Lesbian Defense Fund; an information sheet from Boston Bread and Roses; a gay bibliography (June 1971), and a pamphlet for the Yvonne Wanrow Fundraising Concert. Yvonne Wanrow was sentenced to 25 years in prison for murder that The Yvonne Wanrow Defense Committee claimed was self-defense.

Includes photocopies of the following: an article from the Los Angeles Times entitled, "Fight for Job Rights and Social Status - Lib, Gay: Women in Alliance" (1971 July 26); clippings addressing homosexual bibliographies and libraries; press releases regarding the West Coast Women's Music and Cultural Festival (1981 Sept) and Shepn Koyech, an anthology of writings by Jewish lesbians (1979 July 6) ;and information and a price list for writings by Judith Stein, Jewish lesbian, feminist. Also includes correspondence from Santa Monica City Library to Evan Paxton (1971 July 16), from "Evelyn" to "Alice" regarding essay submissions (1980 Sept 23), from Ellen Witkovsky, Executive Director of Berkeley JCC to Bonnie Podell (1981 Dec 2), and from Gwen Marie Graphic Arts to Bonnie (1982 Jan 18).

Contains documents from two organizations: Good Taste Productions and Macaroon productions. Good Taste Productions was based in Santa Monica, CA and organized "quality entertainment and cultural events for women." The folder includes press releases, a survey of possible events, pamphlets and flyers from events sponsored by the organization, correspondence, building permits, and receipts and check book balance. Macaroon Productions produced women's events and was based in Hollywood, CA. The folder includes flyers for events sponsored by Macaroon Productions and tickets to Macaroon and Good Taste events.
