The collection consists of correspondence between then President Alice B. Hayes, Joan B. Kroc and her assistant, and members of the University of San Diego and larger community; financial documents related to the Joan Kroc's gift to the University, letters of congratulations for founding the Institute for Peace and Justice, as well as domestic and international peacebuilders offering help with the new institute. - Biographical / historical:
-
The Joan B. Kroc Institute of Peace and Justice at the University of San Diego was founded in 1998 following a $25 million gift from Joan Kroc in the form of McDonald's stock. Mrs. Kroc helped to form a similar institute, the Kroc Institute of International Peace Studies, at the University of Notre Dame in 1986. The Kroc IPJ, as it is commonly known, hired its first director, Dr. Joyce Neu, in 1999 and officially launched the institute in 2001. The institute broke ground on its state-of-the-art building on the west side of the University of San Diego campus in October 2000 and held an official dedication ceremony in 2003. In 2007, the IPJ became part of the newly established Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies.
