Biographical Note
Soheyl Dahi, the founder of Sore Dove Press, was born in Iran in 1954. After completing his education in England in 1978 and
deciding he wanted to experience living in the United States, Dahi returned to an Iran plagued by political unrest that affected
his travel. Finally arriving in the U.S in 1979, Dahi headed west to California and settled in San Francisco.
There, Dahi pursued his literary interests. As an Iranian in America during fraught political times, he was comforted by the
open and accepting community of poets and writers surrounding City Lights Bookstore. Inspired by the artistic scene he found,
Dahi established Sore Dove Press in 1986 with two friends; however, after publishing two magazines in 1986 and a few books
by 1992, a lack of funds eventually led Dahi to put his publishing efforts and press to the side.
In 2003, however, Dahi was inspired by John Martin's model for Black Sparrow Press. Dahi adapted this model and adjusted and
focused his output goals to limited and boxed editions, broadsides, and artwork. Since 2003, the press has been in continuous
operation, and Dahi has published works by and developed relationships with Jack Hirschman, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Michael
McClure, Harold Norse, Joanne Kyger, Diane di Prima, ruth weiss, David Meltzer, and many others.
