Includes general personal and family documents, including photographs, 1926-1998; correspondence files, 1933-1998 (bulk: 1972-1997); subject files, 1941-1997; manuscripts and publications, 1951-1995; sermons and public presentations, 1931-1997; Mennonite Brethren Biblical Seminary files, 1960-1996; video tapes of sermons and lectures, 1987-1995; audio tapes of sermons and lectures, 1949-1989. Also includes some documents relating to the life of J. B.'s wife, Nettie Unruh Toews.

Biographical / historical:

J. B. Toews was a prominent pastor, mission board executive, educator, historian and conference leader in the Mennonite Brethren Church. He served as pastor of Mennonite Brethren congregations in Nebraska, Saskatchewan, Kansas, and California. He taught at Bethany Bible Institute in Saskatchewan, Freeman (S.D.) College, Mennonite Brethren Bible College and Mennonite Brethren Biblical Seminary, and also served as president of the latter two schools. From 1953 to 1963 Toews was General Secretary of the Mennonite Brethren Board of Foreign Missions, and was Executive Secretary of the Mennonite Brethren Historical Commission from 1975 until 1982.
