Background
Terry Henderling (1941–2020) was a gay activist involved in queer Democratic organizing in the Bay Area in the 1970s and 1980s. He was a co-founder of the Gay Democratic Club — later renamed to the Harvey Milk LGBTQ Democratic Club — as well as the GLBT Historical Society. Henderling worked on Harvey Milk’s 1977 campaign and as a community adviser during Milk’s administration. He also briefly served as custodian of Milk’s materials before they were transferred to the GLBT Historical Society in the 1990s. Henderling thoroughly documented queer Bay Area events throughout the 1980s, including Pride, Castro Street Fair, and various drag performances. He also traveled extensively throughout the western United States with his colleague and companion, Jim Gordon.
