Background

Scope and content:

63 cabinet cards produced by the firm of Gove y North. Otis M. Gove and F. E. North operated a photography studio in Mexico City from about 1870 to 1884, although about half of these prints contain an imprint crediting North alone.

Each mounted albumen print measures 5"x 8.5" with gold edges and the studio's imprint (along with "Fotografia Americana") stamped on the reverse. There is some variation in printed caption handwriting and a few are uncaptioned. All have handwritten descriptions/translations on reverse - these have been transcribed in brackets. Most cards are warped due to the print seizing up.

About fourteen images depict completed railroad construction projects such as bridges, trestles, and stations. This collection was received in 1915 in the papers of Edward Lee Plumb but were cataloged separately. Plumb was a diplomat, railroad promoter, and vice president of the Mexican International Railroad Company.
