Extent: 62 photographs

Scope and Content Note

Consists of photographs of various Alaskan scenes. Includes the landscapes of Bogoslof Island and Shishaldin Volcano; churches, homes, and other buildings in Akutan, Dutch Harbor, Saint George Island, Saint Paul Island, and Unalaska; people, both Alaska Natives and non-natives; steamships, rowboats and baidaras; flowers; Alaska Native baskets and bags; and Bering Sea region maps.

Arranged into five File Units by subject matter: File Unit 1: Landscapes; File Unit 2: Villages; File Unit 3: People; File Unit 4: Vessels; File Unit 5: Plants, maps, and Alaska Native crafts.

Scope and Content Note

A cartoon has been drawn around a photograph of Evans' face. He is depicted as wearing winter gear and riding on the back of a sea lion or seal. He has a box on his back on which "camera" is printed. A sign on the left reads "Mr. Evans Touring Alaska." Signs on the right read: "Use North Pole Plasters / For Sale at Totems," "Returns of Boston-N.Y. Ball Games at Town Hall at 1 A.M.," and "North Pole." The sea lion/seal is said to have "Speed 2 Miles Per-haps."

Series 2.  Alaskan wildlife and hunting activities, 1900-1915

Extent: 69 photographs

Scope and Content Note

Consists primarily of photographs of fur seals in the wild on Saint Paul Island and Saint George Island as well as men killing fur seals and processing their skins for the fur trade. There are also photographs of men processing a dead whale in Akutan. Additional photographs show walruses, birds (possibly murres), and blue foxes. Some of the photographs show men caring for fur seal pups and blue fox pups while two photographs show men with the results of hunting blue foxes and birds. One photograph shows a herd of reindeer that had been imported into Alaska by BEAR (built 1874; cutter: U.S. Revenue Service).

Scope and Content Note

Consists of photographs of fur seals, walruses, and possibly sea lions. Includes photographs of fur seals on the beach as well as being driven to the killing grounds. Also includes photographs of fur seal clubbing and skinning activities. Some locations are identified as Saint Paul Island and Saint George Island.
Note that the term "fur seal" has been used to describe most of the pinnipeds in this File Unit because "seal" is the term used most often on the lantern slide labels. Closer examination may prove that some of the animals are sea lions. Both northern fur seals and Steller sea lions can be found in Alaska.
