Scope and Content Note

The records in this series date from 1995 to 2015 and undated and consist primarily of administrative files for the Maya Initiative. While this series mostly pertains to Copán and Joya de Cerén, some of the files relate to the El Salvador Earthquake Relief project. Materials are a mix of analog and digital files and include signed project agreements with the GCI's partners, consultant contracts, project proposals and summaries, correspondence, budgets, meeting agenda and minutes, field campaign reports, work plans, videocassettes, a press release, and external articles about the initiative. The files document not only the logistical planning and progress of the projects but also the initial planning meetings that led to the Maya Initiative. The videos consist of recordings of the initial planning meeting, site visits, and interviews. Additionally, a few folders were placed in this series because they contain a mix of Joya de Cerén and Copán files. These include digital images for a GCI open house poster on the Maya Initiative project, Copán and Joya de Cerén digital images and slides, and reference materials on the Mayan sites.

While two sets of digital files are from CDs, most of the digital material in this series were originally maintained on the GCI's shared network drive and are listed here under the "Digital network files" category. They consist of a mix of text, image, database, ArcView, and CAD formats.

Scope and Content Note

These records pertain to the collaboration between the GCI and Instituto Hondureño de Antropología e Historia (IHAH) from 1999 to 2005 to establish a long-term conservation strategy for the Hieroglyphic Stairway at Copán, in western Honduras. The records date from 1972 to 2015 and undated (bulk 1996-2015) and document planning and logistics for the project, comprehensive investigation of the conditions of the Stairway, conservation treatment trials, and the development of guidelines for a protective shelter for the Stairway. Work associated with the condition assessment included archival and bibliographic research, scientific analysis of stone and mortar samples and biological specimens from stone surfaces, monitoring of the Stairway environment, a complete stereophotographic survey, and a condition survey. Records are in analog and digital form and consist of correspondence, meeting minutes and agenda, contracts, budgets, work plans, research notes, bibliographic sources, copies of archival materials, proposals, campaign reports, scientific analysis reports, condition survey drawings and reports, photogrammetry data, photographs, videos, and articles by project personnel. The photographs include general photos taken of the site, images from the stereophotographic survey, historic photos, comparative photos of control blocks over time, and photos of conservation treatment trials. The videocassettes contain footage of the site and interviews with project members and archaeologists. Records also include a copy of the final project report, The Hieroglyphic Stairway of Copán, Honduras: Study Results and Conservation Proposals, which synthesizes all the studies and establishes proposals for the stabilization of the carved surfaces as well as preventive measures and maintenance.

Digital content consists of files copied from CDs (spread throughout the series) and files maintained for the project on the GCI's shared network drive (listed under the "Digital network files" category). They include a mix of text, image, database, video, and CAD formats. Note that in 2015, a GCI consultant migrated CAD files for the project to the 2014 version of AutoCAD and reestablished external references. Those files are listed under the "Digital network files" category.

Scope and Content Note

These records, dating from 1996 to 2016 and undated, document the GCI's collaboration from 1999 to 2002 with the Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y el Arte (CONCULTURA) in El Salvador to develop a site management plan for the archaeological site of Joya de Cerén. Records are in digital and analog form and include drafts and copies of the final management plan, which was completed in the summer of 2002 and presented publicly to local and national authorities and stakeholders and to the vice president of El Salvador by the GCI and CONCULTURA. The resulting plan includes three components: the narrative of the plan, a full mapping of the site and projects, and a detailed description of projects. In addition, an executive summary was developed in English, Spanish, and French to promote the plan and to summarize its contents and proposals for potential financial support. Records also include support documents for the management plan such as project planning files, archival and bibliographic research, and condition assessment drawings and reports. The condition assessment included a detailed topographic survey of the site; an architectural survey of select structures; environmental monitoring; and analysis of (decay mechanisms) potential biological threats, site and structure materials, hydrology, and site drainage. There are also trip and meeting reports; photographs; videocassettes containing interviews and footage of the site; presentation materials; copies of signed agreements with CONCULTURA; and a copy of Conservation Management Planning: Putting Theory into Practice: The Case of Joya de Cerén, El Salvador, a GCI publication regarding the project. There are also files associated with a 2005 experts meeting convened by CONCULTURA and FUNDAR (Fundacion Nacional de Arquelogia) to discuss the management plan and conservation strategies for Joya de Cerén. A small portion of the records pertain to the El Salvador Earthquake Relief project.

Digital content consists of files copied from CDs (spread throughout the series) and project files originally maintained on the GCI's shared network drive (listed under the "Digital network files" category). They include a mix of text, image, database, and CAD formats. Note that in 2015, a GCI consultant migrated CAD files for the project to the 2014 version of AutoCAD and reestablished external references. Those files are listed under the "Digital network files" category.

Files maintained by the GCI's Digital Lab on their shared network drive. Materials consist of CAD drawings, photographs, database files, and text documents associated with Joya de Cerén and the El Salvador Earthquake Relief projects. While most of the CAD drawings duplicate those listed elsewhere in the collection, these files were migrated to the 2014 version of AutoCAD by a GCI consultant. External references were also re-established. A spreadsheet of the updates can be found in Series 1. Administrative and general files under the "Digital network files" category.
