    Historical Note

    The Sierra Nevada Silver Mining Company, one of the mines of the Comstock Lode at Virginia City, Nevada, was actively worked during the boom years of the 1860s and 1870s but never produced great yields. The company continued to produce ore until 1881. Among the investors in the Sierra Nevada Silver Mining Company were George Hearst and William Morris Stewart, a prominent lawyer in Comstock mining cases and U.S. senator from Nevada (1864-75; 1887- 1905).

    Scope and Content

    The collection consists of the business correspondence and papers of the Sierra Nevada Silver Mining Company. There are also documents related to the court case of the Sierra Nevada Silver Mining Company v. the American Mining Company (1862-1863). The Sierra Nevada Silver Mining Company was legally represented by William Morris Stewart, and there are seven documents in the collection related to him. Other subjects covered include mines and mineral resources in Virginia City, Nevada and the Comstock Lode, Nevada.
