Abstract: G.W. Levi Kamel was a sociologist and public health worker. In 1984, Kamel began work monitoring AIDS-related contracts in the Venereal Disease section of the California Public Health Department. Kamel also served as the first secretary for the California AIDS Advisory Committee (CAAC), the entity created by SB910 to coordinate AIDS activities statewide. In 1985, he left government service to become the first paid executive director of the Hemophilia Council of California. The collection includes meeting minutes and AIDS education literature from the Medical Advisory Committee of the Gay and Lesbian Center in Los Angeles; materials related to the California Department of Health Services’ California AIDS Project (CAP), including correspondence, internal memos, financial records and papers related to the first state-funded AIDS outreach program for IV drug users, run by the Haight-Ashbury Free Clinic; and meeting agendas, minutes and reports related to the CAAC. There are also significant materials related to AIDS and AIDS services in San Diego County, such as correspondence, educational materials, personnel records, materials from a community planning meeting, news clippings, and materials related to the San Diego AIDS contract monitored by Kamel. In addition to the contract, these include a script for public presentations, site visit and assessment reports, and correspondence regarding a conflict between Kamel and Joan Freidenberg, Chief of the San Diego County Bureau of Public Health Education.
