    Content Description

This collection contains over 600 letters sent to Paula and Edward Haumann by over 500 different US servicemembers while serving during the Afghanistan and/ or the Iraq Wars. This collection also contains approximately 86 photographs and photocopied photographs, over 160 greeting cards, over 45 ephemera, two compact discs (CDs), and approximately four serial publications sent to the Haumanns during the Afghanistan and Iraq Wars.
The letters generally contain words of gratitude for the Haumann's letters of support, and care packages; however, some US servicemembers wrote more frequently and shared more details about their personal lives, and experiences while serving in Afghanistan, Iraq, Kosovo, Kuwait, the Philippines, and Qatar. This collection contains a few word-processed letters, some with digitally inserted photographs, while other letters have photocopied photographs physically attached to letters using adhesive tape (e.g., folder 3, letter from SGT Markos Rodriguez). Some letters are also physically attached to their original envelopes using adhesive tape, most likely attached by the Haumanns.
Paula and Edward Haumann created approximately 22 handwritten documents listing each soldier they maintained correspondence with between January 2005 through January 2019. These documents record each soldier's military branch, rank, and locations if known. The Haumanns maintained correspondence with servicemembers from the US Army (USA), the US Marines Corps (USMC), the US Navy (USN), and the US Air Force (USAF). Military ranks have been abbreviated according to each branch's modern standard.

    Collection Highlights

This collection contains over 600 correspondence sent to Paula and Edward Haumann from US servicemembers serving in the Afghanistan and/ or Iraq Wars. The selection below highlights the diverse set of themes, location, and experiences shared by some US servicemembers.
    Letters from Afghanistan
SFC Michael M. Villaroman, USA wrote to the Haumanns on March 1, 2007 to thank them for their letter before proceeding to share news about news from his camp. According to Villaroman, one US servicemember, one US civilian, 1 Korean servicemember, and 15 Afghanistan nationals were killed by a suicide bomber who "blew herself up outside the gate" after failing to get inside the camp.
SGT Dara DeLong, USA wrote to the Haumanns from Forward Operating Base (FOB) Fenty, Afghanistan sometime between January and August 2010. Based off the content of the first paragraph and the Valentine's Day themed margins, this letter was likely written in February of 2010. DeLong wrote about the local Afghans; recent casualties and the mental toll it is was taking on all of them; and about being assigned to escort Deborah Mullen around FOB Fenty. According to DeLong, Mullen was visiting FOB Fenty because "she was very concerned about the mental health of our soldiers as well as the sexual assault issue."
DeLong closed this letter by sharing her concerns that female servicemembers were being kept from participating in the camp's bible study group. According to her:
some women . . . had their shift changed; other are given menial tasks so as to miss the study. One male supervisor even told one of the ladies that he was keeping her from going to the study! . . . . Then on top of everything, our group leader was fired per se and moved to a different FOB. The females who are higher in rank, both NCOs and Officers keep mentioning the good old boys club that is taking place over at the battalion. The women are so mistreated it is ridiculous.
    Letters from Iraq
SGT Cassandra Floyd, USA wrote to the Haumanns on April 29, 2005 to thank them for their letter. She noted that it read like a letter from a family member who supported her and the rest of the US armed forces. She predominantly wrote about her motivations for joining the military, and about her family of five. Floyd reflected on the drastically different situation Iraqi children are faced with while growing up during a time of war. She explained that "I see the pictures of these kids over here and . . . fear that [someday] they may be shot or blown up just because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time." Floyd also wrote about the lack of trust she has with the local Iraqi people
"because you just never know. . . . They will use whatever trickery [they] have to reel you in and I'm not fixing to be killed by their kindness. They have gotten a lot of us that way. The sad part is they use kids sometimes as bait."
MAJ Jim Pridgeon, USA wrote to the Haumanns on August 1, 2005 to thank them for their July 23, 2005 letter. He explained that while serving in Iraq his "mission is to gather information on army equipment" to assess their effectiveness and provide recommendations for further use or for complete rejection of use overseas. Pridgeon briefly described living conditions before providing a list of US Army achievements in Iraq that he suspected mainstream media was not covering at the time of writing.
SSG Luis R. Barreiro, USA wrote to the Haumanns on October 26, 2006 to thank them for their letter. He predominantly the living condition the local Iraqi people endure each day and expressed sorrow at not being able to help the children more beyond relinquishing whatever supplies he and his men might have whenever they encounter them.
