Scope and Content of Series

Series 3) EXPEDITIONS AND CRUISES: Notes, reports, and correspondence documenting Raitt's work and participation on research expeditions and cruises. Items in the series primarily span the late 1940s-1970s and include data collected from Scripps research vessels such as Horizon, Spencer F. Baird, Argo, and Ellen B. Scripps. Particular strengths of the series include data from the Antipode and Capricorn Expeditions, and the Vityaz cruise. The first part of the series consists of miscellaneous files arranged chronologically, followed by a second section arranged alphabetically by major expedition or cruise name.

Scope and Content of Series

Series 7) SIO AND THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA: As a researcher at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) beginning in 1948, Raitt witnessed the growth of both SIO and UC San Diego. In addition to Raitt's faculty papers and lecture notes, this series documents the development of the Department of Earth Science, controversies surrounding the 1950 University of California loyalty oath, and Third College (now Thurgood Marshall College). This series contains correspondence, meeting minutes, and relevant reports on the history and development of SIO and UC San Diego.
