Scope and Contents
This collection includes periodicals from nine surfing magazines: Competition Surf, International Surfing, Longboard, The
Surfer, The Surfer's Journal, Surfer: The International Surfing Magazine, Surfing, Surfing: Surfing Action Around the World,
and Surfing Yearbook.
Competition Surf only produced six periodicals during its short career. This collection contains one periodical from Competition
Surf in 1966.
The collection has periodicals from International Surfing dating from 1965 to 1973. International Surfing is a magazine that
was started in California and bought out by a number of surfing companies before it eventually was merged with Surfing (below).
The Surfer is the world's most widely sold magazine related to surfing. It started in 1960 with quarterly releases, but due
to its remarkable success the magazine quickly escalated to monthly issues. Recently, the magazine started releasing yearly
specials as well, totaling thirteen periodical publciations per year. The Surfer is still in print and remains the most popular
surfing magazine in the world to date.
The Surfer's Journal is a California-based bimonthly magazine that released its first issue in 1992. It is still in business
today and is read globally.
Surfer: The International Surfing Magazine was a small magazine that published bimonthly articles from 1963 to 1969.
Originally titled International Surfing Magazine, the Surfing magazine was a highly popular magazine from its early days in
the 1970s until the early 2000s. In 2017, Surfing was bought by its longtime rival Surfer (above).
Surfing: Surfing Action Around the World was a European surfing magazine that was based in the U.K. and Sweden but reported
on surfing events worldwide. It only ran for two years, 1969 and 1970.
The Surfing Yearbook is a periodical that ran for most of the 1960s. It places an emphasis on outstanding surfers and feats
that they have accomplished over a given year.
Of these magazines, only The Surfer and The Surfer's Journal are still independently in business. The other magazines were
either discontinued or bought out by larger competition.
