The John Milner papers consist of articles, presentations, reports, and recordings created by John Milner during his career as a child social worker. John Gillette Milner was a professor of social work at USC for 31 years, from 1946 until his retirement in 1977. He was a founding member of the Delinquency Control Institute at USC and directed the USC Head Start Training Program.

Scope and content:

The John Milner papers consist of articles, presentations, reports, and recordings created by John Milner during his career as a child social worker and as a faculty member in the USC School of Social Work.

Biographical / historical:

John Gillette Milner was a professor of social work at USC for 31 years, from 1946 until his retirement in 1977. He also taught at Tulane University. After receiving his bachelor's degree from Stanford University in 1934 and his MSW from Columbia University in 1946, he worked in his hometown of Twin Falls, Idaho administering emergency relief and as director of the federal transient program. He then moved to Seattle where he worked as the associate director of the Ryther Child Center where he helped introduce residential treatment centers to the United States. He also worked as casework director for the Childrens' Protective Society in San Francisco. He was a founding member of the Delinquency Control Institute at USC and directed the USC Head Start Training Program.
