William Murray Hayes was born on July 26, 1899, in Cincinnatus, New York. Between the ages of 19 and 30, he was a telegraph operator for Western Union. By the 1950s, Hayes was a radar tester for an electronics company. He died on May 17, 1976 in Syracuse, New York.

    Scope and Contents

This collection includes photographic negatives belonging to amateur railroad photographer and one-time Western Union telegrapher William M. (Murray) Hayes. They include images of locomotives, freight and passenger cars, stations, structures, ferries and employees of railroads across the United States and Canada taken from 1900 to 1965. The Delaware, Lackawanna and Western, Chesapeake and Ohio, New York Central, Gulf, Mobile and Northern, Lehigh Valley and Illinois Central railroads are well-represented here.
All negatives are 2x3" or smaller and are stored in paper sleeves. They include nitrate negatives which are stored separately. The paper sleeves may include the following information: railroad name, date, geographic location, and negative subject. Not all of the negatives in this collection were taken by Hayes. The name F. F. Sorrenberg appears on some of the negative sleeves. In addition, there is one box of photographs taking during Hayes's childhood and early life in the community he grew up in (Cincinnatous, New York).
