Biographical/Historical note
Irving Emmer Marcus is a California artist known for abstract expressionism and his art has been exhibited nationwide. He
was born May 17, 1929 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Sidney and Edith Marcus. In 1950, he received his B.A. in Art from the
University of Minnesota, followed by a B.F.A. in Art from the University of Iowa in 1952. Between 1953-1954, he was enlisted
by the U.S. Army where he was stationed in Korea. After military service, he taught art at several colleges in the United
States. By 1959, he served as faculty at Sacramento State, and was the Art Department Chair from 1966-1969. He retired in
1991.
