    Biographical / Historical

    Fletcher Bowron was mayor of Los Angeles from 1938 to 1953. Bowron had been a newspaper reporter, practiced law, and spent six years as a judge of the Superior Court of Los Angeles County. After his term as mayor he was re-elected judge of the Superior Court. After retirement he initiated the Metropolitan Los Angeles History Project, which produced the bibliographical work, Los Angeles and its environs in the twentieth century. Bowron died in 1968.

    Scope and Contents

    Bowron's travel diary describes a trip to Europe in June of 1947, including visits to London, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo, and Paris. He records his daily schedule including meals and transportation details, and also sightseeing excursions and visits with local politicians and dignitaries. He returned to the United States by ship to New York City, and also describes the sea voyage in detail. Bowron's grammar school diploma is from the Poway school district in San Diego County.
