    Biographical/Historical note

Resources make it unclear exactly who Robert and Alexander Austin or David W. Chandler were. However, it appears as though the Austins were mortgagees, and they were involved in a court case with Chandler regarding mortgage payments in 1850 in San Francisco.

    Scope and Contents note

The notice represents the mortgage sale of "Washington Market and other Valuable Property." It states that three lots of land in San Francisco "will be" sold at auction by J.L. Riddle & Co. on July 24, 1850. It is signed and appears to have been written by Henry G. Gordon. There is a note underneath the signature: "Lots to R. & A. Austin Mortgages." On the back, it is labeled "draft handbill" and is addressed to D.W. Chandler and R. & A. Austin.
The receipt is a receipt for claim of $61 from the Superior Court of the City of San Francisco from September 28, 1850, related to the dispute of Robert and Alexander Austin vs. David W. Chandler.
