Scope and Content

This series contains dream journals from Spiegelman and others, active imagination writing by Spiegelman, and related watercolor sketches by Spiegelman. Spiegelman's materials are from when he was a student at the C. G. Jung Institute in Zurich. Dream journals generally serve to record the individual’s nightly dreams (some contain dream interpretations by Spiegelman as well), while active imagination is a Jungian meditation writing exercise.

Series 2: Correspondence. Bulk, 1970-2000. 1946-2010.

Scope and Content

This series contains correspondence between Spiegelman and his personal and professional contacts, many of whom are international in scope (especially from Switzerland, Israel, and Japan, and Britain). Of particular note is the correspondence between Spiegelman and author Henry Miller and renowned Jungian psychoanalysts Marie-Louis von Franz and James Hillman. Research strengths of the series include correspondence with writing partner Professor Victor Mansfield, artist and longtime friend Martin Mondrus, and friend Masako Machizawa. This series also contains dissertations by his students at the Pacifica Graduate Institute, as well as family photographs of Spiegelman, his wife (Ryma), and children (Joshua and Tamar).

Scope and Content

This series includes books and articles by Spiegelman and others. It includes Spiegelman’s recollections of psychologist Carl Jung, extensive manuscript material for The Tree (1974), The Quest (1984), and an unpublished book manuscript about Spiegelman’s navy wartime experiences. In addition, the series includes articles and books written by Spiegelman and articles, periodicals, and books he owned by others; and recordings of lectures and interviews by Spiegelman and others.

Scope and Content

This series contains education materials by Spiegelman and others from Spiegelman’s time at UCLA. It includes his coursework, course readers for courses he took, and his Psychology PhD dissertation, as well as medical records and case studies of patients from his traineeship at the Veterans Administration in Los Angeles. Also in this series are Spiegelman's Analyst’s Diploma Thesis (1959) and patient case studies from the C.G. Jung Institute in Zurich, Switzerland, and papers related to his membership in professional societies.
