    Abstract: The Hilton H. McCabe papers consist of correspondence, reports, photographs, clippings, legal documents and maps documenting McCabe's judicial work with allotments, guardianships and conservatorships of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians in and around Palm Springs, California. McCabe, a graduate of USC's Law School, was appointed as a judge in the Superior Court in Indio, California in 1953, and then as an appeals court judge in San Bernardino.

    Biographical note

    Hilton H. McCabe was appointed as a judge in the Superior Court in Indio, California in 1953, and then as an appeals court judge in San Bernardino. McCabe became heavily involved in land issues involving the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians in Palm Springs, as well as in conservatorship and guardianship issues involving members of the tribe. He features prominently in author Ed Ainsworth's "Golden Checkerboard", and was also identified by Secretary of the Interior Steward Udall as acting improperly in the appointment of executors to wills executed by members of the tribe. McCabe was a graudate of the USC's Law School.
