    Abstract: The album of collotypes documents the Barcelona Exposition of 1888. Included are birds-eye views of the exposition grounds; the greenhouse; the Hemicycle; the Maritime section; exteriors of individual pavilions; and interior displays including those in the Palace of Fine Arts, the Hall of Agriculture and the Palace of Industry.

    Biographical / Historical note

    The Cuban-born photographer, Pau Audouard, moved to Barcelona in 1879 where he opened the photography studio Audouard y cía. In 1888 he was appointed official photographer of the Exposición Universal de Barcelona.

    Scope and Content of Collection

    The album of 60 collotypes documents the 1888 Barcelona Universal Exposition, held in the city's Parque de la Ciudadela from 8 April to 9 December. Included are birds-eye views of the exposition grounds; the greenhouse; the Hemicycle; the Maritime section; exteriors of individual pavilions; and interior displays including those in the Palace of Fine Arts, the Hall of Agriculture and the Palace of Industry. Countries represented in the Palace of Industry trade displays include: Uruguay, Chile, Paraguay, the United States, Tunisia, Japan, Belgium, Germany, Italy, England, France, Austria, Hungary and Spain. A number of the smaller pavilions erected for individual business are also depicted including the one for Audouard's own photography studio.
    The album is bound in black leather with decorative embossing. The title is embossed on the front cover, and the Audouard y cía monogram is embossed on the back cover. Letterpress titles in Spanish are printed on the mounts below the images along with the photographer's credit: Audouard y C.a / Barcelona.
