Biographical / Historical
Charles T. Harbeck (1850 or 1851-1929) was a businessman and naval historian and was author
of A Contribution to the Bibliography of the History of the United States Navy (1906),
published with the assistance of the New York and Boston Public Libraries.
Scope and Contents
Collection consists of papers relating to the U.S. Navy and to naval officers. Material
includes letters, orders, commissions, records of various ships, including the U.S.S.
Constitution, and other documents, primarily dealing with the naval operations of the
Revolutionary War and nineteenth century wars, including the War of 1812 and the Civil War.
There is also a small group of items concerning the British Navy. The collection was
assembled by Charles T. Harbeck for purposes of extra-illustrating Edgar Stanton Maclay's
History of the U. S. Navy, but the project was not completed.
Processing Information
This finding aid was created in 2022 by Melissa Haley as part of the American Presidential
Papers Project with enhanced description of the presidential material present. The items had
been assembled physically and arranged by Huntington Library former staff in the mid-20th
century.
