    Administrative/Biographical History

    Alvan Edmond Small, M.D., of Chicago, Illinois, was born March 4th, 1811, in Wales, Lincoln County, Maine; graduated from the medical department of the University of Pennsylvania; in 1849 was appointed to the chair of Physiology in the Homœopathic College of Philadelphia; removed in 1856 to Chicago; and was author of a popular manual of homœopathic practice. From 1859 to1869, Small occupied the chair of Theory and Practice of Medicine at the new Hahnemann Medical Colege in Chicago, after which he served as President of the College. Cf.     Scope and Contents

    Manuscript travel diary of Alvan Edmond Small (1811-1886) of Chicago, author of a popular manual on homeopathic, during a month-long trip to Europe from 19 July through 22 September 1865. It includes his descriptions of encounters with and his impressions of the homeopathic profession and institutions in Great Britain and France.
