Background

Scope and content:

This collection consists of personal papers, address books, articles and interviews, photographs, scripts, correspondence, client files, notes and notebooks, publicity, and audiovisual materials of Hollywood publicist Harry Clein. The majority of the collection consists of correspondence, scripts, articles and interviews he wrote, and client files.

Dates of the collection range from 1938-2010; however, the bulk of the collection is between 1962-1999.

Some of the scripts include "All the President's Men" [and the making of written by Clein], "A Lady Cab Driver," "Don't Get Mad, Get Even," "Feathertop," and "Mister Magnificent." Some of the scripts for television shows include Melrose Place, The Dick Van Dyke Show, Bewitched, Get Smart, Gidget, and The Stephen Strimpell Show (pilot).

Some of the client files include Alan Pakula, Alfred Hitchcock, Angie Dickinson, Bonnie Bergin, Dorene Johnson, Deborah Kerr, Gene Kelly, George Peppard, Jack Nicholson, Jeanne Moreau, Joan Hackett, Robert Redford, and more.

The bulk of Clein's published articles were from COAST (1969-1972) and Entertainment World (1969-1970) magazines.

Biographical / historical:

Harold "Harry" Clein (July 1, 1938 - June 18, 2020) was a producer and actor, but most known as the co-founder of the Hollywood public relations agency Clein + Feldman and its successor Clein + White. In 2000, he closed his public relations business and became a producer, marketing consultant, and teacher at Los Angeles Film School.

Some of the most popular films Clein was involved with were "Places in the Heart," "Kiss of the Spider Woman," "The Trip To Bountiful;" "Mona Lisa," "She's Gotta Have it," "Dirty Dancing," "Heathers," "sex, lies, and videotape," "28Up," "Cinema Paradiso," "Drugstore Cowboy," "Gods and Monsters," "Talk Radio," "The Usual Suspects," "The Dead," "In the Company of Men," "I Shot Andy Warhol," "Life Is Sweet," "Steel Magnolias," "Gothic," "The Brothers McMullen," "My Own Private Idaho," "The Joy Luck Club," "The Player," "Dazed and Confused," "Before Sunrise," "Welcome to the Dollhouse" and many others. Earlier in his career, Clein was the unit publicist for "All the President's Men,"The Jazz Singer," "The Last Tycoon," "Foul Play," and others. He also wrote the press notes for "Star Wars."

He then worked as a writer for the Los Angeles Times, TV Guide, Show and Coast magazines and as motion picture editor and critic for the short lived Hollywood trade Entertainment World.

Clein received the 2000 Publicists Guild Career Achievement Award in recognition of his efforts in the publicity promotion and marketing campaign for "The Blair Witch Project." In 1995, Clein and Paramount Pictures was awarded the Guild's Maxwell Weinberg Showmanship award for the "Forrest Gump" Campaign.

Harry Clein died on June 18, 2020 in Atlanta, Georgia.
