Abstract: Papers of Robert J. Gould, physicist and research professor at the University of California, San Diego. Materials include
notes, calculations, drafts and reprints of many of Gould's research papers.
Biography
Robert J. Gould, born May 31, 1935, began his studies at Providence College where he obtained his B.S. in Physics in 1957.
In 1963, he graduated with his Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics from Cornell University. Shortly after graduation from Cornell,
Gould began teaching physics at the University of California, San Diego, where he remained throughout his career. His research
focused on atomic, nuclear, and particle processes; statistical mechanics; and applications of astrophysics.
Gould passed away in June 2009.
Scope and Content of Collection
The Robert J. Gould Papers document Gould's research and writing from 1964 - ca. 2005. The collection mainly documents Gould's
writing, as well as the scholarly publication process, and includes reprints, drafts, galleys, referee reports, notes, and
calculations. Correspondence with editors, colleagues, and co-authors is also included. The collection only represents a portion
of Gould's writing and does not contain a complete set of reprints.
The papers are arranged in three series: 1) CORRESPONDENCE & BIOGRAPHICAL MATERIAL, 2) WRITINGS, and 3) NOTES & RESEARCH.
SERIES 1: CORRESPONDENCE & BIOGRAPHICAL MATERIAL
The CORRESPONDENCE & BIOGRAPHICAL MATERIAL series contains a small number of letters from colleagues. Of interest are three
letters from Stan Woosley debating a calculation method with Gould. Also included in this series are Gould's academic biography,
curriculum vitae, and bibliography, current until 1992.
SERIES 2: WRITINGS
The WRITINGS series contains drafts, research notes and calculations, referee reports, and reprints, as well as correspondence
with editors, colleagues, and co-authors. Also included is a typescript draft of Gould's book,
Electromagnetic Processes (2005). Papers in the series are arranged by year of publication.
Along with published papers, the series also contains drafts of papers not accepted for publication, as well as papers given
as lectures at conferences. These are filed chronologically, along with the published papers.
SERIES 3: NOTES & RESEARCH
The NOTES & RESEARCH series contains a large amount of handwritten notes and calculations for an unidentified research or
writing project. Two groups of numbered pages exist and have been kept in these groups, arranged by the page numbers assigned
by Gould. The series also includes three subject files containing pages of notes and calculations. The folder titled "He Photoionization"
contains several letters from Gould, ca. 1970s, written to an unidentified colleague. While these letters mainly describe
his research, theories, and calculations, they also contain anecdotes and thoughts about sports, news, and UCSD campus events.
