Background

"This is a collection of issues of the St. Bartholomew's Journal, unpublished typescripts and ephemera which give a unique insight into Sir D'Arcy Power's relationship with the institution. The Journal issues generally contain his own contributions, such as 'The Hospital Beer' (September 1938) or 'New Blocks of the Past"'(August, 1937) which discusses eighteenth century extensions to the hospital in the light of a newly completed King George V medical block. There are reports and notifications of hospital business; several papers dealing with sanitation, including an unpublished chronology of the hospital laundry in Swanley; manuscript letters from Power's students and pages of notes in Power's hand [or in typescript]. In 1920, after a long surgical career at St. Bart's, he became a governor of the hospital and in 1934 'he was appointed archivist and honorary keeper of the muniments, and began with Gweneth Hutchings, DPh (Mrs Whitteridge) a systematic survey of the Hospital's archives, one of the longest and most complete collections in Europe' (Platt's Lives of the Fellows of the Royal College of Surgeons). At the rear of the volume there is a letter and two pages of notes from Hutchings to Power regarding their research."--Antiquarian bookseller's description, 2013.
