    Historical or Biographical Note

All three ships represented in this collection were built at Union Iron Works, San Francisco.
USS Charleston was launched in 1888. After service in both the Pacific and Atlantic, the Charleston was wrecked and abandoned by her crew in the Philippines on November 2, 1899.
USS Oregon was launched in 1893. The Oregon fought in the Spanish American War in the Caribbean, and later in the Philippine War. After years of on-again-off-again service, she was deemed incapable of military service in 1925. In late 1941 she was sold as scrap and stripped, and her hull was used as a barge during the battle of Guam. The remains of USS Oregon were scrapped in Japan in 1956.
El Primero (built 1893; steam yacht), was built by Union Iron Works for E.W. Hopkins. El Primero was the first steam yacht built on the West Coast of the United States. From 1893 to 1906 El Primero sailed out of San Francisco, after which time it sailed out of Puget Sound. In 1955 El Primero was converted to diesel power. In May of 2012, El Primero was home-ported for restoration in Olympia, Washington.
