Background

Scope and content:

This collection was originally only comprised of records documenting William Parbs' work on the construction of 2780 Marty Way. Those records included a building agreement; handwritten specifications and price lists (including labor); building, water and electrical permits from the City of Sacramento; and receipts from local building supply companies for asbestos (Asbestos Siding and Insulation Co.), fixtures (Poroshin Electrical Studio), hardwood flooring (Friend & Terry Lumber Co.), and hardware and locks (Murray Hardware Co., Record Hardware Company). Other records relating to 2780 Marty Way were found during the 2025 ephemera inventory, including more construction and interior decoration receipts, and a large number of florist's cards addressed to Mrs. Robert Young. It was decided in 2025 to bring all of the 2780 Marty Way material into a single collection.

Biographical / historical:

William Parbs was a North Sacramento-based contractor and builder who constructed homes in the Sacramento area in the 1930s-1950s. This collection of records documents his work on the 1939 construction of a residence at 2780 Marty Way in Sacramento under contract with the owner, Robert Young. It includes the building agreement, receipts, price lists and permits.

Robert Young Sr. was a fingerprint technician at the State Department of Justice, who lived at 2780 Marty Way from the time he paid for its constructed until at least 1989, the last time his name is associated with that address in the Haines Crisscross Guide.

Robert's wife, Rosamund, known as "Rosie," received flowers from several different Sacramento florists over the years for both Mother's Day and her Birthday from her son, Bob (Robert Jr.). Bob often, but not always, remembered to add his wife's name (Betty) to the card. Rosie kept many of the florist's cards.
