Abstract: The Third College Anniversary workshop files document the story of the first twenty years of Third College. The files include
research material, interviews, and essays that were created for inclusion in the volume entitled
Third College Twentieth Anniversary, 1970-1990: Diversity, Justice, Imagination.
Historical Background
Founded in 1970, Third College (Thurgood Marshall College) celebrated its twentieth anniversary during the 1990-91 academic
year. As part of the celebrations, the Third College 20th Anniversary Committee conceived of a book that would tell the story
of the philosophy, mission, and origins of Third College. Professor Bob Dorn of the Department of Literature conducted a twenty-week
workshop, sponsored by Third College and the Department of Literature, wherein twenty students researched the first twenty
years of Third College. The students studied the history, conducted interviews, and wrote essays. The culmination of this
work is the volume entitled
Third College Twentieth Anniversary, 1970-1990: Diversity, Justice, Imagination, edited by Bob Dorn.
Scope and Contents
The Third College Anniversary workshop files document the story of the first twenty years of Third College. The files include
research material, interviews, and essays that were created for inclusion in the volume entitled
Third College Twentieth Anniversary, 1970-1990: Diversity, Justice, Imagination.
The material collected by the workshop's students reveal Third College's emphasis on academic excellence and social responsibility.
The development of the college's curriculum and departments is a common topic, as are the issues of administrative allocations
of funds and resources, and faculty concerns such as workload and tenure. Third College's academic planning efforts, and in
particular the 1969 Lumumba-Zapata College proposal, are particularly well documented.
Arranged in three series: 1) SUBJECT FILES, 2) INTERVIEWS, and 3) ESSAYS.
