    Historical or Biographical Note

Irving Murray Scott, Jr. (1862-1952) was a draftsman and engineer who worked at Union Iron Works, Moore & Scott Iron Works, and Pacific Coast Shipbuilding Company. Scott Jr. was born in Maryland on October 15, 1862 to Mary Hopkins Scott and George S. Scott. Scott Jr. had an older brother named Wakeman H. Scott (born 1861) and younger siblings named John T. Scott (1865-1960), Margaret H. Scott (born 1867), George Worthington Scott (1869 July-1941 January 31), and Henry T. Scott (1877 January 13-1949 July 15). He was the nephew of Irving Murray Scott (1837-1903) and Henry Tiffany Scott (1846-1927), who were the owners of Union Iron Works in San Francisco's Potrero District in the 1860s-1890s. His brother was John T. Scott (1865-1960), who co-owned Moore & Scott Iron Works from 1905-1916 and founded the Pacific Coast Shipbuilding Company in 1918. Scott Jr. died in Alameda on April 16, 1952.
Scott, Jr. was an engineer in San Diego, California in 1890 when he was 27 years old. He lived in San Francisco in 1892 and was an engineer of an unknown company (California, Voter Registers 1866-1898). He started working at Union Iron Works in 1893, and remained a clerk there for about ten years. In 1905, Irving's brother, John Thomas Scott (1865-1960), became a partner in the Moore & Scott Iron Works in San Francisco, and Scott Jr. followed him into the new firm. When the company's yard was relocated to Oakland in 1909, he moved to Berkeley where he lived there at least into the late 1930s (U.S. City Directories). While employed at Moore & Scott Iron Works, Scott Jr. also served as an instructor at the U.S. Shipping Board School, established at the University of California, Berkeley by his teacher and mentor D.W. Dickie. He was employed at Moore & Scott as a draftsman in 1909, and was listed as an engineer at Moore & Scott Iron Works in 1913 (U.S. City Directories). He continued with the company, presumably until 1916 when his brother sold his interest in order to join in a new partnership called the Pacific Coast Shipbuilding Company. This short-lived business built ships at Bay Point, California (now known as Port Chicago), for service in WWI. Once again, Scott Jr. went to work at his brother's new firm. Irving M. Scott, Jr. was listed in the city directories as an estimator (at unknown company) from 1915-1918 and 1922 (U.S. City Directories).

    Collection Scope and Content

Irving Murray Scott Jr. business papers and plans (SAFR 15792, HDC 125) includes many blueprints and mechanical drawings dating to his employment at Union Iron Works, Moore & Scott Iron Works and the Pacific Coast Shipbuilding Company, all of the San Francisco Bay Area. The collection consists largely of technical data on the subject of Marine Engineering compiled by Scott, Jr. during the course of his education and working career. The collection is available for research use without restriction.
The majority of the individual documents consist of the contents of three notebooks on marine engineering from the Shipping Board School at the University of California, Berkeley. These notebooks contain technical examination questions to qualify for engineering officer positions; specifications and drawings of specific work projects, such as vessels repaired at the Moore and Scott Iron Works; and projects arranged alphabetically at his various places of employment. Most of the data is about steam engines, largely but not exclusively marine in character. A series of indicator cards contains test data compiled on various steamship engines, such as the steamers CLAREMONT, SYBIL, MARSTON, and STATE OF CALIFORNIA.
The final textual series consists of title pages of a number of trade journals which were collected over the years by Scott. Jr.
The marine engineering plans consisting largely of details of marine and auxiliary engines, have been processed and indexed separately from the business papers.
